Christmas Shopping Failures 2: Plants - SICKLY EATERS

Christmas Shopping Failures 2: Plants

12:47:00 AM

Perhaps what makes me such an awful gift giver is that I sometimes can't separate my opinions from others. For instance, I love plants. I don't know why, but I find them pretty adorable, like a pet. To me they're somewhere between a goldfish and a hamster. Choose the right ones and you can have like the chillest, most sturdy pet ever, and they actually psychologically and biologically make your life better! This is basically why the big succulent craze began, but I would argue that epiphytes, or air plants, are an even better way to go.
Now, I know some people don't really share the same affection for plants that I do, but the benefits alone are enough reason for me to want to give plants to everyone like a weird, eco-hippie Santa.

This little stand popped up in my mall the other day and my heart skipped a few happy beats. Turns out this little traveling stand is owned by a lovely couple who sell their air plants at different malls at different parts of the year. Every so often a customer will come up with questions and they engage in conversation eagerly. You can see how passionate and knowledgeable they are about their craft.

If you've gotten this far and still have no idea what I'm talking about, epiphytes are plants that don't need soil or roots, they live happily off air, water, a3nd light hence the term air plant. In the wild you'll see that they do attach themselves to trees but the "roots" they use don't take anything from their hosts.

One of the biggest things I love about air plants in particular, is their ability to filter the air. Airplants, even the greener ones, have trichomes, that is fuzzy little hairs that collect and "eat" the dust in the air. Who doesn't want cleaner air??

There are so many different types of air plants, all of them are pretty low maintenance but that doesn't mean they're all completely alike. Most air plants only need to be watered once or twice a week but can survive without water for a much longer time than that.

One of the main separations of air plants is color, there are green plants and silvery plants. Silvery air plants need a little more maintenance in terms of sunlight, they most likely need to be set near a window in almost full sunlight. Greener plants however, may actually be burned in full sun and so are completely happy staying a little deeper inside the house as long as they get some sort of light.

If there isn't already enough for you to love about air plants, here's another crazy thing. They reproduce... kinda gross but also freaking awesome. Epiphytes only flower once but, once the mother flowers, she starts producing "pups" or daughter plants and they start to grow together and form a ball unless otherwise separated. It's like the cutest happy ball of a family.

I think I'm just spending these posts defending my gift ideas... but I guess I'm hoping that people will see that even awful gift givers try to be thoughtful. You know, even if it doesn't come across that way... Merry Almost Christmas/Holidays!
