Little Adventures: The Douglas Albert Gallery - SICKLY EATERS

Little Adventures: The Douglas Albert Gallery

9:00:00 AM

As poor college students, we dream of going to exotic, far-off places where you can see things that you've never seen before. But there are so many little wonders that are sometimes so close to use that we don't even see them. It's time we appreciate the things around us before we go looking for the things that are out of our reach. And so, welcome to the Douglas Albert Gallery.

The little shop is owned and managed by a man who, frankly, came off as a bit of a snob. Possibly with good reason. Not sure, we didn't stick around long enough to find out.

The shop is cramped and cluttered in the most beautiful way possible. It's a maze of wonders almost asking for you to slip up and knock something over. Everything in the shop is monstrously expensive, but even more monstrously beautiful. Phia and Jimmy courageously engaged the owner in conversation, he tried in vain to sell them "priceless" etchings for money that they didn't have. I wandered listlessly, enjoying and wondering at the oddities in ignorant, naive silence.

Is it rude of me to love the art but detest the curator? I appreciate his taste, but I couldn't keep myself from being repelled by his air of arrogance about him. I admire the artists and teachers who approach their students with enthusiasm to share the beauty rather than simply pointing out the students' ignorance of the beauty.

Despite my biased complaints about the owner, the shop really is a wondrous place, and I would recommend a visit to anyone who asked. I would also tell them to approach with caution, or at least a very large wallet.
