Hand-Cut Rice Paper Gingko Leaves, Branches, Steel Wire

People die, good things end. It's strange and terrible how the world seems to keep turning just as it always does. How I'm still standing and staring at the news articles and obituaries while the events of my life go on untouched. I keep thinking that if the world were just and fair, it's only a matter of time until it's my turn, my tragedy. So much of my life is spent waiting for that moment.

This piece was created to consider the unique loss of loved ones, meditate on the sustenance their lives provided, and remember the birthright of those still unfallen.

"I reflect on the work that brings this food before me; let me see whence this food comes
I reflect on my imperfection, on whether I am deserving of this offering of food
Let me hold my mind free from preferences and greed
I take this food as an effective medicine to keep my body in good health
I accept this food so that I will fulfill my task of enlightenment"

The place setting of the mortar and pestle indicates use and process.
However the fallen leaves may indicate the passing time.
The bowl catches only the leaves that happen to fall into it, the consumer is allowed to process and enjoy that which falls to their lot.
