Spending the Weekend
7:59:00 PM
Vince came to visit and spend the weekend together so I took him around the city. He always says he feels like he's driving back in time whenever he comes to our small town. But there's a quaintness to this historic city that I love and I think he has come to admire too.
First things first, BREAKFAST. We went simple for some healthy, homemade fruity french toast. The strawberries were sweet but not totally at their peak yet so I mixed in some sugar and agave nectar with a dash of apple cider vinegar. Ideally I would use lemon but it was just too early in the morning for squeezing fresh lemon juice. I also added in some mint just for some freshness and color, and because the basil didn't survive the winter. Although, I do have some rosemary growing there behind it in the tiny square planter.
The plate on the right is the first piece I made, I like to call it a Deconstructed French Toast Scramble. It was still pretty good.
After Breakfast, we headed off to Central Market to visit my friends at Ebenezer Wholistic Foods, and their new stand with Rijuice! I forgot to take pictures but I do have some pictures from a visit in the winter, I'll put a few of them in there. We spent most of our time searching for EWF's stand, but we found some other really awesome ones in the process.
I'm thinking about doing a more in depth Central Market Blogpost possibly with some individual spotlights of a few of my favorite stands.
After we finally found Ebenezer's stand (by asking the help desk), we decided we needed to sit down and take a little time to regroup and look over the stuff we got. So, we stopped by Prince Street Cafe around the corner. We just grabbed a couple of soda's which were uniquely really good. He got a Jamaican Ginger Ale sweetened with honey (you can really taste the difference), and I got a root beer which Vince described as "really smooth" and I don't completely know what that means but I have to agree. I'll just say it's one of the best root beers I've had, and I love root beer.
I found a wonderful little stand at central market selling really great quality plants and herbs. I bought a really healthy looking basil plant and a little carton of wheat grass. I've been wanting to try wheat grass shots and since I don't really know any places in this little town that make them, maybe I should make my own!
I also bought a Light Green Juice (Kale Spinach Apple Lime), for Vince to try. It tasted a bit too healthy for him but I quite liked it. One of the Rijuice guys was explaining how they had changed the original lemon to lime because it helped the flavors blend better and I think it might be true but I think I actually like the taste of lemon better than lime.
We then carried our loot to the car and took a little walk, exploring the city. There's a little alley beside the newspaper factory and a fancy pants restaurant that leads into a beautiful little courtyard with wall fountains all around the back. Red brick, elegant trees and dappled sunlight is probably one of my favorite combinations.
Part of the courtyard is actually outdoor seating for the restaurant but the other part is open to the public we saw musicians and old couples taking advantage of the nice shaded seating.
